L-Arginine is Effective in Elderly People
- Published by Dr. Rainer Böger Professor and Head, Clinical Pharmacology Unit Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Medical Center, Hamburg-Eppendorf - Author of more than 140 original research papers in peer-review journals (more than 60 papers on studies relating to ADMA and L-arginine supplementation).**
Recently, information is being spread through the internet stating that L-arginine is ineffective in old age, when restoring nitric oxide is most urgently needed the most. There is scientific proof that this statement is totally inaccurate.*** L-arginine is absorbed into the blood stream and converted into NO and only then and there - where it is needed by the body. L-arginine is converted into nitric oxide in the blood vessel wall - not in the blood itself. This happens even more strongly when combined at an optimized ratio with L-citrulline, as in Arginine Cardio.*
The authors of this false information that L-arginine is ineffective in old age - notably Neogenis Labs give no reference to any scientific studies on which they base their statements. However, they claim that their product (**) is more effective in increasing nitric oxide in the body than any L-arginine product. They support this with a nice looking graphic for which they do not supply the source or publication. The graphic is supposed to show a higher increase in nitric oxide levels in blood generated from their product, which they claim to be a direct nitric oxide donor, than from L-arginine (actually, they show that L-arginine leads to almost no increase in nitric oxide at all).
Unfortunately, this information found on the internet is based on false assumptions; and, even more unfortunately, the ordinary arginine customer cannot distinguish where their claim is flawed. I wish to clarify the science behind nitric oxide and discuss the pros and cons of the different products and enable you to make your choice based on real, published, and reviewed science in a transparent manner. L-arginine/L-citrulline product, which is based upon real science, it can and will stand up against all false claims.**
A. The graphic from Neogenis labs contains unpublished data that has never been critically reviewed by other scientists in the field. It shows the release of nitric oxide in a few milliliters of blood within a test tube. Of course, a direct NO donor does release NO into the blood under such artificial conditions. L-arginine does not, because L-arginine is converted into nitric oxide in the blood vessel wall - not in the blood itself.
B. When you swallow a direct NO donor such as a tablet from Neogenis Lab, it will release NO wherever it is. And it is... in the stomach after swallowing. High levels of NO in the intestinal tract causes diarrhea - if you consider that a desirable clinical effect, just go ahead! L-arginine does not cause trouble in the intestines, but it is absorbed into the blood stream and converted into NO only then and there - where it is needed by the body. This happens even more strongly when combined at an optimized ratio with L-citrulline, as in Arginine Cardio.**
C. The levels of nitric oxide as shown from Neogenis Labs in their graphic, if ever reached in a living human being, are detrimental to your health. Levels as such can only be reached in a living individual during septic shock - a life-threatening situation! So, it's good that this was an experiment in a test tube, because it has absolutely no meaning to your health!!
D. Is L-arginine ineffective in old age? Well, first of all, it is correct that in old age the biological action of nitric oxide is urgently needed. But, if the authors had known the scientific literature well enough, they should have known that as early as 2003, we published a placebo-controlled clinical study which explicitly addressed the effects of L-arginine on vascular function in individuals over 70 years of age: "Oral L-arginine improves endothelial function in healthy individuals older than 70 years." This scientific study was published in the journal Vascular Medicine after having been thoroughly reviewed by experts in the field. It showed that in 12 healthy older people (mean age, 74 years), as little as two weeks of L-arginine already caused a significant, measurable improvement of vascular function (i.e., improved flexibility of the arteries). L-arginine does work in older age people and stating it doesn't is a terrible falsehood.***
Arginine is the precursor of nitric oxide (NO), the major endogenous protector of the heart and blood vessels that the body can make. A sufficient supply of L-arginine is a prerequisite for the ability of our blood vessels to make NO. It is NO that keeps the blood vessels smooth and flexible. It is the decreasing ability of the arteries to make NO which leads to stiffening of the arteries, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.
My co-workers and I have published many more studies on the clinical effects of L-arginine. Amongst them is the discovery that the combination of L-arginine plus L-citrulline has superior effects on vascular health as compared to L-arginine alone. Arginine Cardio is the only nutritional supplement on the market that is based on this strong science!*** This is more than enough reason for you to use Arginine Cardio. No other dietary supplement is known to have such superior effect on cardiovascular health!
Be aware of false claims that you may be confronted with, especially in the internet, where many "experts" seed bits of information without providing the evidence for the correctness of their statements. Be wise and trust in the scientific data only!

- Clinical studies show including the Nobel Prize for medicine that L-Arginine is a treatment for cardiovascular disease. Your success is a function of what product you take and the ratio of arginine to citrulline and the seriousness of your disease. (With Arginine Cardio everyone can have a degree of success)
